Cameroon is embarking on a crucial phase of its HIV response with the launch of the second Cameroon Population-based HIV Impact Assessment (CAMPHIA) survey, dubbed CAMPHIA 2024. This national survey aims to gather critical data on HIV prevalence, treatment, and care in the country.

Survey Details

The survey, led by the Ministry of Public Health, involves over 15,000 randomly selected households across Cameroon. It offers free HIV testing services to participants and will provide valuable insights into the country’s progress towards achieving the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets.

Launch Event

The official launch took place on August 1, 2024, in Yaoundé. The Minister of Public Health, Dr. Malachie Manaouda, emphasized the importance of CAMPHIA in guiding the country’s HIV response and highlighted Cameroon’s achievements in reducing HIV transmission.

Key Objectives

CAMPHIA 2024 will:

  • Assess Cameroon’s progress towards the Sustainable Development Goal 3 and UNAIDS targets.
  • Inform the refinement of HIV prevention, care, and treatment policies.
  • Provide data for better decision-making in the fight against HIV.

Data Collection

The survey involves trained counselors, interviewers, and laboratory technicians visiting households to collect information and blood samples. Participants will receive HIV prevention and treatment information and will be linked to care if necessary.

Partnerships

The survey is a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Public Health, the National Institute of Statistics, the Cameroon Baptist Convention Health Board, ICAP at Columbia University, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and other stakeholders.

Expected Outcomes

The results of CAMPHIA 2024 will inform programmatic improvements and help Cameroon strengthen its health systems. By participating in the survey, households will contribute to a national cause and gain access to vital HIV health services.

CAMPHIA 2024 represents a significant step towards Cameroon’s goal of controlling and eliminating HIV as a public health threat. The survey’s findings will provide valuable data to guide the country’s efforts and ensure a healthier future for its citizens.
