CAMPHIA 2024
The Population-based HIV Impact Assessment (PHIA) Project, launched in 2014, is a collaborative effort to measure the progress of HIV prevention and treatment programs in high-burden countries. Led by national Ministries of Health, PHIA surveys collect data on HIV prevalence, access to services, and program effectiveness. Funded by PEPFAR through the CDC, and supported by ICAP at Columbia University, PHIA aims to inform policy decisions and guide interventions to control the HIV epidemic.
PHIA surveys offer participants household-based HIV testing and counseling, along with information on other HIV-related services. By assessing progress towards UNAIDS’ 90-90-90 and 95-95-95 targets, PHIA helps countries track their efforts and identify areas for improvement.
ICAP provides technical assistance to PHIA countries in areas such as data collection, laboratory infrastructure, and survey design. Leveraging its expertise in HIV research and program implementation, ICAP supports the goal of a global HIV epidemic free world.
The Cameroon Population-based HIV Impact Assessment (CAMPHIA) was conducted in 2017-2018, spanning all 10 regions of the country. Led by the Ministry of Health and supported by international partners, CAMPHIA teams provided confidential HIV counseling and testing to a representative sample of Cameroonians. The study’s findings, presented at AIDS 2018, offer valuable insights into the country’s HIV epidemic.
CAMPHIA 2024 was launched on August 1st at the Hilton Hotel Yaounde. In partnership with the U.S. government, specifically the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) through the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the survey aims to assess the prevalence of HIV/AIDS and the effectiveness of prevention strategies in Cameroon.
Presiding over the launch, Cameroon’s Minister of Public Health, Dr. Malachie Manaouda, emphasized the importance of this initiative in guiding the country’s HIV response. The survey, which will run from August 2024 to February 2025, will involve random sampling of 15,360 households across the country, interviewing approximately 28,405 individuals aged 15 to 49.
By providing free HIV testing services to participating households, CAMPHIA aims to identify undiagnosed cases and connect individuals with appropriate care. The survey’s findings are expected to inform evidence-based policies and programs, contributing to Cameroon’s efforts to achieve the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets and ultimately eliminate HIV/AIDS by 2030.

CAMPHIA 2024 represents a significant step towards localizing U.S. health programs in Cameroon. Over 70% of the implementation funding was allocated to the CBC Health Board, a local faith-based NGO. The survey involves blood tests which are safe and confidential.
